Work happiness must be a right
It may seem nice to tick off some last tasks in the evening, but working outside of agreed hours also has disadvantages. Think, for example, of the impact on the work-life balance. Yet not everyone seems to be concerned about this. Two in five working Dutch people (42%) actually have the idea that work-life balance is mainly an important topic for younger generations. And while this should be a point of attention for every working Dutch person. A good work-life balance is important for our work happiness. Something that, according to a large majority (57%), should be a right in the Netherlands.
Key pillars for work happiness
But how do you ensure work happiness for your employees or for yourself? Working Dutch people indicate that various factors play a role in this. For example, having nice colleagues is the most determining factor for almost half (47%) of them. Having a good work-life balance (45%) and a good salary (42%) are also important for our work happiness.
Kari Littley, an expert in employee wellbeing at OneFit: "It occurs in almost every organization that employees exceptionally have to work outside of agreed working hours. It is extremely important to remember that this remains an exception. However, our research shows that a large group of workers today finds this more than normal – and that is concerning. Therefore, it is important to be vigilant that the frequency with which your employees work outside of agreed hours does not become too high. This helps them to maintain these boundaries and keep their work-life balance and work happiness in check. Because the latter is very important for both working Dutch people and organizations. Happy employees also contribute to a good atmosphere and higher productivity. Organizations can monitor whether employees are happy in their work and provide them with tools to maintain work happiness. This way, as an employer, you can work together with your employees to ensure that their work happiness is safeguarded, they enjoy their work environment, and their productivity is increased."
